Urban Development Authority

The Urban Development Authority was established by an Act of Parliament bearing No 41 of 1978 with a view to promoting integrated planning and implementation of economic, social and physical development of the areas declared by the Minister in charge of the subject of urban development.

Accordingly, the UDA has been empowered to function as the key urban planning and implementing agency of the country.

  • Preparation of development plans for declared areas and planning of capital investments.
  • Implementation of development projects and schemes approved by the government.
  • Formulation and implementation of urban land use policy.
  • Reaching agreements with any person in implementing development projects.
  • Undertaking and completing any uncompleted development project abandoned by a certain person.
  • Formulating programs to enhance capital.
  • Preparation of environmental standards and planning activities to enhance the environment.
  • Undertaking any task relating to building engineering, any other operation, and infrastructure development.
  • Acquiring and retention of any movable or immovable property or disposing of any movable or immovable property.
  • Planning and implementing of housing schemes and clearing slum areas and carrying out development activities in those areas.
  • Formulating development projects or planning schemes for other government agencies when required.
  • Approving and coordination of development projects or schemes of any government institution.
  • Supplying of technical planning services for the benefit of other government institutions.
  • Providing consultancy services to any government institution and regulating activities of such projects or schemes.
  • Charging fees for any building rented or services supplied.
  • Receiving grants, donations and assistance in respect of any job undertook to be carried out
